NARRATIVES
American Society of Mining and Reclamation (ASMR)
ASMR has evolved from a small West Virginia advisory council (1973), originally supported by those concerned with the reclamation of lands disturbed for the extraction of coal in Appalachia, to a professional society of international prominence. The focus of ASMR has been broadened to represent and serve a diverse national and international community of scientists, practitioners, private industry, educators, planners, and government regulators involved in mineral extraction and the reclamation of disturbed lands.
The Society revolves around seven Technical Divisions: Ecology, Forestry and Wildlife, Geotechnical Engineering, Landscape Planning and Design, Tailings Reclamation, Soils and Overburden, and Water Management. A National Meeting is held annually where information is exchanged between academic professionals, those who are practicing reclamation in the field, students, and all other interested persons. Workshops as well as Field Tours of reclamation sites are offered at the meeting.
ASMR publishes a magazine, Reclamation Matters, which is currently available to members at no cost and to other interested persons at a subscription rate of $10 per year. The Society maintains a web page at http://dept.ca.uky.edu/asmr/W/, which includes more detailed information concerning the structure, function, and benefits of being an ASMR member. Membership is available at various levels—Corporate, Regular, Student, and Sustaining—at annual dues of $100, $50, $10, and $100, respectively. For additional information contact the Executive Secretary, Richard Barnhisel, 3134 Montavesta Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40502; phone: 859-351-9032.

Since 1992, individuals now at BioMost, Inc. have been involved in the development, design, and implementation of passive treatment technologies. In order to provide a complete “turn-key” service to the mining industry, government agencies, and grassroots organizations, BioMost, Inc. has assembled a team of individuals with a proven track-record for providing innovative effective solutions and sustainable high quality work.
Experienced in both passive and active treatment system design, installation, monitoring, and O&M, BioMost focuses on applying “hands-on” experience and professional education/expertise to ongoing advances in technology including the economic recovery of metals. Knowledge gained through experience that has contributed greatly in the development of passive treatment technology has been an understanding of historical and current surface and underground mining practices and permitting requirements; overburden characterization and groundwater and surface water hydrology including chemistry and mineralogy relating to the generation of, and practices to prevent, degraded mine drainage; management of government (State, Federal, local), private foundation, and private industry contracts; site and drainage characterization and evaluation.
From site evaluation, to cost analysis, to design and implementation, BioMost develops cooperative efforts with its clients to fulfill their needs, answer their questions, and solve their problems. Total project costs have ranged from less than $5,000 to over $1,000,000, with design costs ranging from less than $5,000 to over $250,000. Within the last 10 years, BioMost, Inc. personnel have been involved in the design of over 50 single-technology and integrated passive systems resulting in the construction of more than 250 passive treatment components of all types. These systems treat a combined total of over 1,000,000,000 gallons of mine drainage annually. In addition, hundreds of acres of active and abandoned mine lands have been successfully reclaimed.
Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation (EPCAMR)
EPCAMR works on a regional level with County Conservation Districts, community watershed organizations, local governments, State and Federal Agencies, Universities, and Schools to educate and inform the public about ways in which they can become involved in local efforts to reclaim abandoned mine lands and to restore their community watersheds impacted by abandoned mine drainage.

Foam Concepts, LLC designs and packages polyurethane foam systems for geo-technical applications. Products include 2.2 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) and 2.6 pcf pour foams and spray foams. Foam Concepts rigid foams also meet the USCG standards for flotation foam. Polyurethane foam, or PUF, has been used by most Federal and State agencies for abandoned mine land (AML) work, by private mining companies and by many provinces of Canada. PUF has several characteristics that make it ideal for capping and closing mine features. It is lightweight, but strong, it will not fail under its own weight and is very impervious. Because no heavy equipment is required, PUF can be used around subsidence features with less risk of caving the surrounding ground.
Foam Concepts’ products come in a range of sizes from less than an ounce up to 22 pounds. FOAMPLUG™ can be used to stem, deck and plug drill holes or core holes from one inch to sixteen inches in diameter. Equipment-less Foam Sealant™, or EFS™ is typically used to close and cap abandoned mine features including shafts, portals, raises and subsidence. EFS™ comes in portable, pre-metered bags that expand to one-third cubic yard or in 55 gallon drum sets that make about 14 cubic yards. EFS™ can also be run through a plural component mixer or pump such as a Graco model E-30. Foam Concepts provides design, application and logistical assistance to agencies, engineering companies and contractors on a wide variety of projects requiring light weight fill or sealing. Office of Surface Mining (OSM)
Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is charged with balancing the nation’s need for continued domestic coal production with protection of the environment. Created in 1977 when Congress enacted the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, OSM works with State and Indian Tribes to assure that citizens and the environment are protected during coal mining and that the land is restored to beneficial use when mining is finished. OSM and its partners are also responsible for reclaiming and restoring lands and water degraded by mining operations before 1977. OSM focuses on overseeing the State programs and developing new tools to help the States and Tribes get the job done. We partner with universities, other State and Federal agencies and public groups to further the science of reclaiming mined lands and protecting the environment through the science of reclaiming mined lands and protecting the environment — including initiatives to promote planting more trees and establishing much-needed wildlife habitat. Each year OSM trains hundreds of State and Tribal professionals in a broad range of needed skills.
